More Americans Reaching 100 Years of Age Than Ever Before

Between 2000 and 2014, there was a 45% increase in Americans aged 100 or older according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further reporting from the National Center for Health Statistics shows that more people are hitting the century-old milestone than ever before in history. In 2000, the number of people who hit 100 years old in America was 50,281, which grew to 72,197 by 2014.

The majority of this group living to reach 100 are white and female, according to the NCHS, while Hispanics are typically the least represented minority.

Although heart disease is still the leading cause of death in this group, Alzheimer’s Disease is the fastest growing cause of death, increasing by almost 120% within this group between 2000 and 2014.
