Rectum exams are nobody’s favorite. If you are a man over 50, you are no stranger to these procedures. But like most unpleasant doctor exams, there’s a good reason for your doctor to get rather intimate with your rectum.

That reason is to check your prostate. This internal organ is important to screen because prostate cancer is the second most common cancer for men, with more than 3 million cases a year.

So now that we have terrified you with these numbers (sorry about that, but the truth is scary,) here are some simple changes to your diet that will help prevent prostate cancer.

  1. Eat more plant-based fats

Animal-fats have been linked to increasing the risk of prostate cancer. So with that being said, switch to plant-based fats. These include fruits, nuts, seeds and olive oil. Avoid butter and cheese. We know it’s not easy, but it will be worth it!

  1. Pick fish

Did you know that Omega-3, also known as fatty acid (what an awful name,) has been proven to not only decrease the risk of prostate cancer, but also slow the growth of cancer cells? That’s why you should introduce more fish with abundance amounts of omega-3 in your diet, including tuna, salmon, trout and mackerel.

  1. Chow down on food with folate

Having low folate levels in your blood has been also linked to prostate cancer. So to combat that, add in more foods with folate, such as green vegetables, orange juices and beans.

  1. Add more red foods to your diet

The reason foods like tomatoes and watermelons are red is because they are filled with an antioxidant called lycopene. In studies, men who consumed more of these types of food were less likely to get prostate cancer. So, there’s no harm in introducing more of these fiery colored foods. The redder the better.

  1. Introduce soybeans

Isoflavones is another nutrient that has been proven to decrease the risk of prostate cancer. Soybeans, lentils, peanuts and chickpeas are some of the foods that this nutrient is found in.

So go ahead and eat up!

There’s no magic formula for preventing prostate cancer. But, eating more of the foods mentioned above while regularly exercising- is only going to help make those rectum exam results come back positive.
